Thank you for your time Hello, my name is Mario Garcia. I am writing to you on behalf of the former Robert G. Heft. Mr. Heft was the designer of the original 50-star flag, which is currently our nation's longest serving flag. Unfortunately, due to Mr. Heft'suntimely death 3years ago,January 19, 1941 – December 12, 2009 his original flag is being lost to time and deterioration. It is a very important piece of history that should be preserved and treasured. If you are unaware of Mr. Heft's story of Old Glory, here is aquick refresher:

Robert G. Heft, formerly of Saginaw, MI, was a 17-year-old high school junior in Lancaster, Ohio, when he had an amazingly perceptive political insight: the government would have to add two states for balance when Alaska sought admittance to the Union. So, banking on his intuition, Heft designed a 50-star flag, upgrading from the 48-star flag at that time, for a class project. His History teacher, Stanley Pratt, was skeptical and gave the perceptive youth only a B- on his class project. He then challenged Heft to get his flag accepted in Washington and only then would he raise his grade. Heft accepted this challenge by sending his flag to Washington, D.C., via his congressman, Walter H. Moeller of Ohio, and it was accepted. President Dwight Eisenhower, himself, called Heft to congratulate him on his feat. Heft made national news when television cameras followed him into Pratt's class and the chagrined teacher had to change Bob's grade to an A. Heft's flag design was officially adopted July 4, 1960 and became the longest serving flag on July 4, 2007.

I am trying to make sure that this priceless piece of American history is saved.

When Bob was alive, I was his consultant, working with Bob to sell his original flag that he made, to provide a trust fund for his niece and nephews. At one time Bob had placed the flag on Ebay for a million dollars, but no one took him seriously, as many people still think the designer of the flag is Betsy Ross.

Unfortunately, Bob passed away before he could sell this flag and now it sits in a vault, waiting for his estate to be settled. I am still trying to fulfill my promise to Mr. Heft to sell his flag and keep it within our great country. However,I have tried and it seems that the only interest I am receiving comes fromforeign embassies. I can't believe that our own country would not want to savea priceless piece of our history and keep the flag in America where it belongs.Would it be possible to save our flag through an act of congress? I know rightnow it is an economically hard time to justify a bill or act to save this flag, butI believe it is a must to do something to preserve this piece of American history.I propose a price of one million dollars, to buy and preserve this flag and theamazing story of Robert Heft, so that it can go in the history books and beshared with future generations to come. Betsy Ross designed the 13-star flagand made it into the history books, why can't Bob make it into the books with his 50-star flag? He had the foresight of a 50-state country, I hope you canhave the vision of preserving this flag and accepting into the history books.Maybe we could move the flag from state to state, each year, in the order the states were accepted into the union, showing honor of the flag for which itstands.Bob would be so proud, as he was always an avidsupporter of our veterans and troops fighting today. If you have any ideas or questions please contact me, so that we can save this artifact of American History. Thank you for your time and consideration.Sincerely,

Mario M. Garcia
